Pontis Foundation

Slovakia

The Pontis Foundation is one of the largest grantmaking and operational foundations in Slovakia. The name of the foundation is taken from the Latin word for bridge and expresses our purpose to connect the sectors of Slovak society with one another. Over the last two decades of our work here we earned trust of nonprofits as well as corporations. There are great results behind us of making these sectors work together: annual regranting of 1 million EUR out of corporate funds to NGOs, 6500 volunteers in 17 cities helping NGOs via Our Town event, Heads are Helping program engaging professionals into pro bono services and Pro Bono Advocates with 70 law entities engaged, 30 corporations in Pontis Foundation´s led Business Leaders Forum on corporate responsibility and Engage Group on corporate volunteering. But there are still many challenges in Slovakia to be addressed, such as the issues of democratic modernization – lack of transparency, quality of education, status of minorities, political culture and overall rules of the game. To achieve progress towards transforming society, Pontis Foundation is bringing together the leaders from all sectors to foster innovations in solving the social problems of the country. The next challenge that lies ahead for Pontis Foundation and for Slovakia is how to cultivate passion, power, expertise and resources of bearers of positive change into complex and long-term projects that improve collective life.
